Self and Peer Assessment

The Self and Peer Assessment tool is a way for users to answer questions provided by the instructor, and then have others in the class (peers) and/or themselves evaluate their answers, guided by a variety of grading criteria also provided by the instructor, and each worth a specified number of points. Questions provide structure and content to the Assessment ("What is 2 plus 2?"), while the criteria that accompany each Question provide the means to evaluate the responses to those Questions ("Did the answer = 4?").

With Self Assessment a student submits their assignment in Blackboard, and then, after the deadline, criteria are provided and the student evaluates their submission. Evaluation can involve assigning marks (which can be set up to allow for partial credit, or just right/wrong), and/or textual feedback.

With Peer Assessment the process is the same, except that instead of evaluating their own assessment, students evaluate a given number of other students' submissions.

Assessments can be precisely scheduled to allow the proper time for the submission and evaluation process to be completed; including the time to access any content items associated with the assessment. Instructors have the option of using Self and Anonymous evaluations. These options may provide a comfort level that can result in more candid assessments and evaluations.

  7. Under Self and Peer Assessment Options, in the Evaluation Dates area, set the time/date window for students to evaluate their own and their peers' submitted work.

  • Show Evaluation Results to Submitter - Select Yes to allow each student to be able to see their peers' evaluations of their work, select No if you do not want them to be able to view this.

Note: Blackboard randomly assigns each user the specified number of submissions to evaluate, there is no way to control who gets to evaluate whom.

  • Do you want to make the assignment available? – Enable this option to give students access to the Self/Peer Assessment.
  • Do you want to track the number of views? – Enable this option to track how many times individual users access the Self/Peer Assessment.
