Course Design

The Course Design tool lets you customize the look and feel of your course. You can upload a course banner, choose a navigation style (buttons or text), and select colors for the navigation area.

Changing the Navigation Style

From the Control Panel:

  1. Click on the Course Design link in the Course Options section.
  2. Click on the Course Menu Design link.
  3. Click on the Buttons radio button or the Text radio button.
    Note: It takes a few seconds for Blackboard to change the navigation style. You must wait until the right options for each style show up before continuing. If you clicked on the Buttons radio button, the type, shape, and style options will appear. If you clicked on the Text radio button, the background and highlight color options will appear.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on the Submit button.

Adding a Course Banner

From the Control Panel:

  1. Click on the Course Design link in the Course Options section.
  2. Click on the Course Banner link.
  3. Click on the Browse button to find your banner.
    Note:
    You must create and save a banner in .gif or .jpg format before browsing for it.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on the Submit button.
Removing a Course Banner

From the Control Panel:

  1. Click on the Course Design link in the Course Options section.
  2. Click on the Course Banner link.
  3. Click on the Remove this banner check box.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on the Submit button.

Q: Do I need to use this tool?
A: No, but you may want to personalize the look of your course. This feature lets you create a look for your course that is different from other Blackboard courses.

Q: What is a course banner?
A: A course banner is a graphic file (.jpg’s or .gif’s) that is usually about 450 x 90 pixels. It can contain the title of the course and may have an additional image or photograph.

Q: How do I create a course banner?
A: You can create a course banner in any graphics program, like PhotoShop or Illustrator, or you can scan a hardcopy image and save it as a .jpg. The Internet has many free online banner generators that let you create banners by typing in the desired text and choosing a font style and color.

Q: Can I use a banner in more than one course?
A: You can upload a banner to as many courses as you want.

Q: Can I copy my course design from one course to another?
A: If your campus has the Instructor Course Copy module, the course banner and button style will copy if you choose “All Content.”
