Adaptive Release

Adaptive Release of Content provides controls to release content to users based on a set of rules provided by the Instructor. The rules may be related to availability, date and time, individual users and user groups (such as course Groups), scores or attempts on any Gradebook item, or review status of another item in the course.

This feature may be used by you or course developers. Some Instructors and course developers may choose to take advantage of advanced rule functionality to create sophisticated combinations of release rules on items. Others may utilize the basic rule functionality to release content to specific users or groups and/or to allow users to view content based on their performance on an assignment.

The following options are available:


Basic Adaptive Release Rule

The Basic Adaptive Release rule allows you to add and modify one rule (based on the Gradebook) for a single piece of content. This single rule may have multiple criteria. For example, the rule may require the user to meet both date criteria and review status criteria before the content is available.

From the Control Panel:

  1. Select the Content Area item (Syllabus, Course Materials, Assignments, External Links).
  2. Select the Manage button next to the content item.
  3. Select the Adaptive Release link.
  4. Select the Display After and Display Until Date/Time.
  5. Browse for a username or group.
    Individual Student:
    - Click on the Browse button.
    - Type the studentsusername in the box.
    - Click on the Search button.
    - Click in the check box next to the students name.
    - Click on the Submit button.

    Groups:
    - Click on the group name on the left.
    - Click on the right ( > )arrow.

  6. Select a Gradebook item.
  7. Select a Condition:
    - Item has at least one attempt: An attempt is recorded for any Gradebook item when the user submits a test or survey, or when a score is entered or modified.
    - Score: less than or equal to, greater than or equal to, and equal to.
    - Score Between
  8. Choose the item to be viewable after the above criteria has been met.
    - Click on the Browse button.
    - Click on the folder and click on the item. Selecting an item will enable Review for that item.

  9. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on the Submit button.
 

Advanced Adaptive Release Rule

Advanced Adaptive Release allows Instructors to add multiple rules to a single content item. If multiple rules are created, the content is visible to the user if any of the rules are met. Each rule may have multiple criteria.

For example, one rule may allow users in Group A with a score above an 85 on a Test to view the content item. Another rule for the same item may allow users in Group B to view the same content item only after a specific date.

From the Control Panel:

  1. Select the Content Area item (Syllabus, Course Materials, Assignments, External Links).
  2. Click on the Manage button next to the content item.
  3. Click on the Adaptive Release: Advanced link.
  4. Click on the add rule icon Rule button.
  5. Enter a name for the rule and click on the Submit button.
  6. Use the options in the Action Bar on the Manage Criteria page to build the rule.
    a. Select Date to add date criteria to the rule.
    b. Select Membership to add users or group criteria to the rule.
    c. Select Gradebook Item add a quiz or survey to criteria to the rule.
    d. Select Review Status to add this criteria to the rule.
  7. Click on the OK button.
  8. Repeat Step 4 - 7 to add multiple criteria to an item.
  9. Select the Criteria Type boxes for that item.

  10. Click on the OK button.
  11. Click on the OK button again.
